The PDQ NP Service Center Makes Perfect Sense
By Ken Tashiro, VP & COO, Elysium Inc.

Elysium has been around for the past 20 years as a CAD data translation company. Today, our customers range from small machine shops to huge defense contractors that won't tell us about the products that leave their factory floors. All will tell you that Elysium translates CAD data. Nissan Motors will tell you otherwise.

Several years ago, Nissan Technical Center North America (NTCNA) decided to embark on a 3D paperless system process called ‘V3P’. The V3P essentially demanded a complete re-engineering of how Nissan produced automobiles: the design and post-design processes, the software tools, the manufacturing methodologies, and best practices. The biggest difficulty for Nissan during this time was the great divide between design engineering and manufacturing, or, put more simply: Can you easily build what you design? If you can't, and builders have to stop building to return a job back to the designer, it's called a quality problem, regardless of the cause. Nissan delved deeply into researching this problem only to discover that it was related to bad geometry (slivers, gaps, discontinuity) and other issues related to manufacturability (manifolds). Most of the problems were a direct result of data translation from both within Nissan and between Nissan and its suppliers. Long story short, we developed PDQ NP -- Product Data Quality Nissan Package. PDQ NP is now a Nissan standard for CAD data quality. Though I cannot publish the gains, I can say that the success of the system within Nissan is now being acknowledged at the highest levels. What Elysium did at Nissan is analogous to a firewall that will identify bad geometry -- fix it, stamp it or guarantee it; either pass it through, or isolate and reject it. Nissan is the first company to tell you that Elysium does more than translate data: Elysium ensures the quality of the data.

We’ve made several strides to ensure that Nissan's suppliers are well taken care of by both Elysium and our partners. Our newest partner is Design Intent Engineering (DIE), which provides automotive engineering and design, CAE, prototyping and styling to the global transportation industry. DIE has formed, in collaboration with Elysium, the Nissan Authorized PDQ NP Service Center.

While Nissan and Elysium have been addressing many obstacles in the implementation of V3P here in North America, a major problem was to be able to provide a PDQ NP check service that meets the release requirements and compliance of NTCNA. Further, that service would need to be scaled to smaller-sized companies. DIE was the company that proved its ability to provide a skilled group of engineers, fully knowledgeable of the NTCNA design methodologies. The partnership was formed and the Service Center was founded to assist all Nissan Suppliers in their user of PDQ NP.
